Chicken vs Steak August 23, 2009

When sending back those RSVPs, you have a very important decision to make.  Yeah, I’m talking about chicken vs steak.

Food and service is provided by Stocks on Second, a downtown American restaurant that is the exclusive caterer to The Milestone Inn.  I was initially put off by the idea of an exclusive caterer, thinking that without competition the quality would suffer, but trust me we would not have chosen The Milestone if we had any doubts about the food.  We have three current or former professional chefs on the guest list!

First let me start with the obvious good choice:  the steak.  It’s a flat iron, which is a nice cut from the shoulder that has some marbling and occasionally a vein of fat running through the center.  The steak is tenderized and served with a shallot burgundy sauce.  The caramelized shallots that top the meat have that delicious sweet flavor that goes so well with the burgundy wine sauce.  It’s a good cut to be served medium with a nice pink center and a seared crust.

You know if it were up to me we’d all be eating beef but I know not everyone wants a steak and it’s nice to have some choice.  We tried several different options at Stocks and although everything was delicious, I am shocked to say that the roast chicken was the best, definitely the best chicken I’ve had in a long time!  It’s skinless but when it comes out of the oven it has that nice crispy texture and the taste of fresh herbs when you take the first bite.  The chicken is stuffed with a basil chicken farce and comes with a nice light vermouth sauce.  A typical serving will have a piece of breast meat and a bone-in drumstick.

I was really impressed with the food.  I know the chef took some extra care in preparing our tasting portions but I guarantee this is not going to be your typical wedding meal.  Of course there are appetizers and sides too that I’ll just leave as a surprise.

Our invitations arrived last nite- and they look great!  We worked on a custom project, basing the design off of  ironwork  used on a door at The Milestone.  Heather from Letterpress Light did a fantastic job, and was a pleasure to work with…Can’t wait to send them out!

The Best Bridal Shower…Ever! August 8, 2009

My mother and friends threw me the absolute best bridal shower…It was held at Niko’s in Lebanon, PA- a very cool warehouse loft space turned into an Italian restaurant and bar.

The thought that went into all the planning and every last tiny detail was truely amazing.  Highlights were placecards made from my company’s hangtags, menus that went back to my wedding colors, and of course the cookie favors that my mom baked from scratch.  Really, there’s just way too much to mention in this post.  You can have a look at pics from the day here:

I was so touched at the turnout for the day…So many family and friends that I haven’t seen in ages…The whole day is such a nice memory that I’ll cherish forever…Thank you everyone!!!

Harrisburg Hotel Smackdown July 25, 2009

A comparison of the two major hotels in downtown Harrisburg:

The Hilton has a large conference facility, and the weekend of our visit the hotel played host to a childrens beauty pageant.  Despite the chaos in the lobby, check in was expeditious, although the elevators were overwhelmed during our stay.  The room was very pleasant, although it looked slightly dated.  Amenities included a flat screen TV, stereo with iPod input, fridge, and complimentary wi-fi.  The king size bed was comfortable.

The Crowne Plaza room was much smaller.  The bed was queen size.  The furnishings were adequate and looked newer than the Hilton, except for the TV which was tube style.  No charge for wired or wireless internet.  The room lacked a fridge and a stereo with iPod input.  The bathroom was clean but very small.  We had to wait in line for 10 minutes to check in, but once we got to the desk check in went smoothly and my loyalty to Intercontinental hotels  was rewarded with a five dollar coupon for the bar.

The verdict:  Hilton is worth the extra charge for its generously sized rooms.

Other notes:  The Hilton is closer to the Starbucks.  Both hotels have a restaurant and bar, although you will find plenty of dining and drinking options in the small downtown area.  The hotels have parking garages for a fee, but street parking is free on weekends.
